We just finished the first day of fishing.  7 more to go.  We are in Placencia, in southern Belize.  We have a great group of folks in addition to Jon, Millie & I.  Our good friends, Tim & Joanne Linehan (fishmontana.com) happen to be staying at Dianni's Guest House as well.  Craig Hayes, the owner of Turneffe Flats Lodge has joined us for two days of fishing prior to our group heading to his wonderful establishment on Saturday.  The permit fishing was tough today due to poor tides.  The big news is that Charlie Hrbek caught his first tarpon ever today with guide Bruce Leslie.

I apologize for being out of touch for a few days as I have been reuniting with great friends coupled with a mediocre internet connection...
Anyway, the second day of fishing in Placencia could best be described as coulda woulda shoulda.  Millie had two follows from Tarpon right to the tip of her rod.  Not many permit were on the flats but Craig Hayes managed to hook a fish with guide Eworth Garbutt.  I had three shots with Bruce Leslie, the last of which was to a single fish pushing thirty pounds.  The fish was happy, the cast was good enough, and the permit ate.  Unfortunately, the fish came unbuttoned shortly after getting her on the reel.  Bruce & I fell deflated to the deck of the boat.
I was able to find some redemption today at Turneffe.  Dion poled Jon & I around the keys all day. We took turns all day and saw 9 permit, the last of which I landed.  I would guess it to be around six pounds.  The rum tastes good tonight.
