Fishing Report - 08-08-2011

Henry’s Fork Fishing Report for August 9th, 2011

Box Canyon: Current flows out of Island Park dam are at 661 cfs. The Box Canyon continues to provide stellar fishing day in & day out. On warm sunny days we’re still seeing good numbers of Golden Stones and the fish are seeing them too…..& taking advantage their presence. The Chubby Chernobyl continues to be a top producer along side the Designated Hitter & Mutant Stone. If the Golden’s aren’t flying, rig up with a big rubber leg and drop a smaller nymph behind it for fast action. Copper Johns, Zebras & small Beadheads in red seem to get the most attention. Cloudy days can make for some super fast fishing with streamers. Gaff’s Box Canyon Double Bunny is a top choice for roping those big Box Canyon Rainbows. It’s been a tad crowded out there, but if everyone practices proper river etiquette, we can avoid any hurt feelings. Have fun!

Last Chance/Railroad Ranch/Wood Road 16: As we move into August, the Ranch is becoming a more challenging fishery. The heavy crowds we saw in late June through July have really made the fish a tad skittish. But, with a slight change in tactics & presentation, the fishing can be awesome. Downsize your tippet, lengthen your leader & employ a stealthy approach. We’re still seeing good numbers of Flavs, Caddis & PMD’s. During off hatch hours, dig in the box for those Ants, Beetles & Hoppers….And to everyone’s delight, we’re starting to see some Honey Ants.

Warm River to Ashton: This section of the Henry’s Fork continues to fish well.  The Golden Stoneflies are still showing on warm sunny days.  Nymphing rubberlegs with a smaller beadhead nymph is always a safe bet & the streamer fishing continues to produce some really nice big fish when the skies turn gray. Evening caddis hatches continue and always offer some good fast fishing just before dark.

Ashton Dam to Chester Backwater: Current flows out of Ashton dam are1830cfs. The lower river has slowed down considerably. Fishing early & late or on cloudy days is your best bet. There are still Golden’s showing & good number of caddis & PMD’s though. Keep your eyes peeled to spot working fish. Ants, Beetles & Hoppers can raise those opportunistic trout tight to the bank. When the skies are dark, bust out the streamer box, rope up a big articulated hunting fly & pound those banks.

Chester to St. Anthony: Flows below Chester are currently 1870cfs. The story down below Chester pretty much mirrors Ashton down.

Henry’s Lake: Fishing on the Lake has been fastest around the inlets & springs. Hang Chironomids under an indicator, strip leech patterns or Stillwater nymphs for best success. Damsels are always a safe bet, as are any of Rickards Stillwater patterns. The Lake should only get better as summer fades into autumn.

Hebgen: Gulpers are on! Spinners are really getting it done, but don’t leave those nymphs and emergers at home. After the Gulper action settles, try a hopper dropper rig with a BH Pheasant Tail around structure. Hanging Chironomids around structure & weed beds is always productive as well. If you’re felling extra aggressive, strip leeches at will to entice those Hebgen hogs.

Madison River below Hebgen Dam: Releases from Hebgen dam are currently at .1,010cfs. The River has finally come into shape. The Big Salmonflies have come and gone, but we’re still seeing fair numbers of Golden’s. Hoppers, Beetles & Ants fished tight to the bank can produce better than average fish. PMD’s are showing when the conditions dictate. Small BH rigs are always a safe bet and Streamers early & late can bring an alpha Brown to the net.
